Field Studio Fall 2021 | Bears Ears National Monument

Course: DES 3520: Design Product Studio 2
Faculty: Assistant Professor, Elpitha Tsoutsounakis

"Design Juniors in the Field Studio with Assistant Professor Elpitha Tsoutsounakis are working with community partners again this fall to explore issues of education, sustainability and rural community in regions surrounding Bears Ears National Monument. The studio will be partnering with the Rural Utah Project, Yestermorrow, and Friends of Cedar Mesa. While students in the Field Studio research and frame their own projects in digital, physical, and platform product and situate their responses in a variety of commercial and speculative forms, they respond directly to broad challenges posed by studio partners. The Rural Utah Project asks the students ""what a rural activist needs to be successful."" Yestermorrow has invited the students to explore their new Bluff campus as a method for sustainable and community engaged education. And in their second collaboration with Field Studio, Friends of Cedar Mesa have challenged the students to design for education around Visit With Respect. The students visited Bluff this past weekend to experience the area first hand and meet with partners from the community.
